Rent a Truck:

If you  wish to move yourself to another city or town, you need to hire a truck or a trailer or a van, depending on the volume of load you have to transport. Here are a few points which will help you hire the right kind of vehicle for your move:

One of the first points to consider is the distance you are likely to travel. This is because the charges for hiring a truck would vary according to the distance traveled. Since most truck rental agencies charge the customer two-way fare, distance becomes all the more important. If you are moving just to another town close by, then this should not be a problem, but if you are moving to another part of the country or another city far away, then paying for two-way journey could be very expensive. While most rental agencies would accommodate one-way fare, it is always better to ask before you go for it.

Your next area of concern is the size of the truck that you are going to hire. How big should it be? While most truck rental companies would provide you with a size guide, here are the basics: 26' will move 4+ bedrooms; 24' will move 3-4 bedrooms; 17' will move 2-3 bedrooms; 14' will move 1-2 bedrooms; 10' will move a studio or small 1-bedroom apartment. It is wise to discuss with the truck rental company about any large domestic goods which you have or any specialty item which requires special moving tools. Having a lot of fragile and delicate items may result in increase of the truck size. In any case, the moving company representative would be the best advisor in this regard. The thumb rule when it comes to the size of the truck is always to hire a slightly larger size of truck, rather than scramble for space at the last moment. Switching truck sizes at the end, would only involve more delays and hassles.

When hiring moving trucks, it is wise to know the peak seasons so that you can plan your move accordingly. In case you are moving in the peak season, which begins around end of May and carries on till end of September, you might have to plan the hiring weeks ahead of your move to avoid disappointment. It is good to reserve your vehicle well in advance. The other point to remember is that most people plan their moves towards the beginning of the month. So it could be a good idea to plan your own move some time in the middle of the month, if you can make your moving plan a bit flexible.

The next issue you have to tackle is what you are going to do with your existing car, boat or RV? You could also possess a motorcycle or even a snowmobile. Remember a trailer hire is expensive and can increase your truck rental cost by $150 to $300. of course it would depend on the time of your need as well as the distance it has to travel. It is good to check with the truck rental company regarding all charges involved before you finalize the deal.

Regarding the insurance charges for truck rentals, most of these agencies charge around $30 per day for everyday the hired truck is on the road. If on top of that you are towing your car, please check with your existing insurance company whether your car is protected during transit.
