Relocation can give jitters to even the most stoic amongst us. The sheer planning and effort involved in packing, moving, storing, unpacking is nightmarish, to say the least. While packing and storing the different sections of the house require separate sets of skills, this article will specifically discuss the packing and storage of the most prized room of the house – the dining room. Perhaps like Rome, no dining room is built in a day. You have collected each item, perhaps piece by piece, which has adorned the room and amazed your guests over these years. Now it is time to pack the contents of this well-loved room and store them. The dining room would normally consist of both small as well as large items where each component requires a special type of skilled packing and storage. One of the basic mistakes we all make is that we discard the original packing of several of our crockery and crystals as these are really the best materials re-packing them during storage or relocation. The first point to remember
Dining room furniture and fittings during storage also need to be done carefully. Place the heavier items at the bottom with light weight and delicate and fragile items on top. It is better to mark each box with the kind of contents it contains, e.g., crystal wine glasses, etc. This will ease your unpacking exercise when taking out of storage. It is also a good idea to stick stickers marking with ‘this side up’ and ‘fragile’. Such declarations also help the packers and movers when shifting boxes.
Dining room table top should never be kept of the floor with other boxes on top. Use plenty of cloth rags and padding material if you want your dining room furniture to be stored safely and with out any scratches or dents. All plates and platters must be packed and stored vertically to prevent breakage or cracking. All cups and mugs with rings must be packed with the ring getting an additional wrap around. Insert a small paper roll in the ring space, as this prevents the handle from coming off. When packing and storing plates, place a layer of bubble wrap in between. This prevents cracking.
It is understood that the dining room perhaps contains the most delicate and breakable items for storage. If you plan and pack properly, self storage for your dining room can be an easy task. When you store the items along with other items of the house, make sure that you can access the most essential items first, in case you are relocating to a new city. After all, eating would be one of the first tasks you do, when you reach your destination city.
